Hi,
Subject: Clarification on Extent of Inspection for SBGR under OSIM
I would appreciate your guidance regarding the extent of inspection required to meet the legal requirements under the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM).
Specifically, I am seeking clarification on the limits of inspection for Steel Beam Guide Rail (SBGR) and associated components (e.g., energy attenuators) located in the vicinity of bridge and culvert structures.
In practice, SBGR installed over a structure often extends beyond the structure limits. In some cases, this extension is approximately 10 m from the centerline of the structure, while in others it may extend more than 50 m on either side.
Could you please clarify how the boundary of inspection should be defined in such cases? In particular:
Should the inspection of SBGR be limited strictly to the structure limits? what would be this limit?
Or should it include the full length of SBGR functionally associated with the structure, regardless of its length?
Your clarification will help ensure consistency and compliance with OSIM requirements during inspections.
Thank you for your assistance.
Kind regards,
Shahram Forghani Arani
