Proposal summary

A new guideline has been drafted to improve the scoping of geophysical investigations for foundation-related applications concerning MTO assets. Selected challenges often addressed through the application of geophysics are presented alongside the corresponding typical investigation solutions.

Proposal details

Foundations investigations typically involve advancing boreholes to obtain subsurface information for use in design. Another valuable tool is geophysics, which is a non-destructive approach to collecting subsurface information. Geophysics involves exploiting physical phenomena to interpret the behavior of earth materials in response to a stimulus. There are numerous geophysical investigation methods available for use, so MTO’s Foundations Section has developed a guidance document to aid Ministry staff and engineering service providers in navigating this topic. The intent behind this guideline is to improve communication and enhance the delivery of geophysical investigation services for foundation-related applications undertaken for MTO assets. Part 1 of the guideline provides an overview of common methods including theory, advantages, and limitations. Part 2 describes applications of geophysics and provides discussion on the selection of appropriate methods depending on the investigation objectives and site conditions. Part 3 describes MTO’s general reporting requirements for geophysical investigation services.
